Gordon Orr is the former China head and Chairman of Asia for the global consulting firm, McKinsey & Company.
Between 1993 and 2015, Gordon launched and then built McKinsey in China as part of a 30-year career with the firm, leading them to become the preeminent professional services firm in China. In addition to leading McKinsey in China for many years, Gordon also led the firm’s Asia-wide practice from 2009-14 and sat on McKinsey’s global shareholder board for more than 12 years, where he was responsible for risk management and governance. He retired from McKinsey in 2015.
Gordon remains a Senior Advisor to McKinsey and is also a non-executive board member of the Hong Kong-listed companies Swire Pacific, Meituan Dianping and Lenovo as well as EQT in Sweden. He is also a Non-Executive Director of several privately held China and UK based tech companies. Beyond these formal roles, he provides counsel to a small number of China focused entrepreneurs.
In addition, Gordon is Vice Chairman of the China Britain Business Council, a member of the Oxford University China Advisory Group, and a Chatham House Senior Advisor on China.
Gordon earned an MA in engineering from the University of Oxford and an MBA from the Harvard Business School. Gordon writes regularly on China topics, mainly on LinkedIn where he has more than 1.7 million followers.
